Icons Gossip Girl Biography

Unlike her onscreen alter-ego Blair Waldorf, who comes from the supercilious, self-contained universe known as New York City’s Upper East Side, Leighton Meester was born under decidedly less glamorous circumstances. Meester’s mother gave birth to her while she was serving a prison sentence for drug trafficking, though contrary to popular belief, Meester was born in a hospital, and not a jail cell. Meester has spent her career defending her mother’s past, and credits it for her nonjudgmental outlook on life.
When she was 11, Meester moved to New York with her mother to pursue a career in acting, attending the Professional Children’s School and modeling in her spare time. Playing Manhattan socialite-in-training Blair Waldorf on CW’s wildly popular teen soap Gossip Girl, Leighton Meester and her merry gang of impossibly glamorous cohorts have become the successors to the throne once occupied by the gang at West Beverly and then by the precocious clan of Orange County. Since the show's debut four years ago, Meester has catapulted to the top of young Hollywood, and parlayed her plum role on television into a burgeoning film and music career. Although Leighton Meester’s success came at an early age (she was barely out of her teenage years when she landed the role in Gossip Girl), no one can accuse the actress of not having paid her dues. Before superstardom befell her, Meester floated from series to series, appearing in Law and Order, Boston Public, Once and Again, Tarzan, 7th Heaven, Entourage, 24, 8 Simple Rules, Numb3rs, Veronica Mars, Entourage, CSI: Miami, Surface, and House over the span of eight years. Then Gossip Girl soared to the forefront of popular culture. Leighton Meester was a star, and her critically acclaimed performance earned her Teen Choice Awards in 2009 and 2010. But Meester’s ambitions far exceed the the small screen. Her burgeoning film career includes roles in The Haunting of Sorority Row, Killer Movie, Date Night, and the upcoming films Country Strong, The Roommate, Monte Carlo, and Oranges. Meester’s also experimented with a singing career, releasing two singles and appearing on Cobra Starship’s hit "Good Girls Go Bad," though deep down we wish she hadn’t.
